I am in awe of the body of work you have accumulated over the years. From Vietnam to the dance galleries and everything in between. Your work is an inspiration. Many thanks for sharing it here. I wish you continued success and hope to see and learn from more of your work for many years to come. Best Regards Vijay Nanda

Hello Richard I was also with HHC 45th Engineer Group in Phu Bai...in the communication group. Murry Carrol,l below, makes mentions of photographs...I'm computer literate to find them. Posting the link would be awesome. Thanks so much......Jerry K. Kentucky
Richard, I've just tonight found your website. Don't know if you remember me, Murray Carroll. Served with you in HHC, 45th Engineer Group. Left Phu Bai in early January, 1969. Your photos brought back so many memories; Bill Wiggins, Bud Forgey, yourself and "Weird Harold" Ritzen. I have seen absolutely no one from our unit since coming home. I do know that Bill Wiggins is (was) a very successful contractor and lives in Fairhope, Al. Please drop me a line; loved the photos. Murray

Hi Richard, I grew up in a ballet family where my father was always shooting VHS and photos of my twin sister and I at recitles. He too did such a great job that the studio looked to him for doing all the prints for families to purchase and to shoot video for critiques. Your interview and photos have brought back wonderful memories for me. Now if you could just help me with getting my flexibility back! I too live in Georgia. What equipment are you using? Post production tips? Keep the inspiration going! Jared~. Jhouske@ hotmail.com

Re to some remark you put on lorin niculau's page and the TS lens (2007).
Richard, you make me smile, I'm an architect too and also have a TS lens (but from the F1 period)and hardly ever use it.
The rule you said you forgot is the following: the continuous line through the plane on which the image gets captured (film or censor plane), the perpendicular line on your tilted focal line and the imaginary line through the objects you want in focus all have to intersect in the same point.
Just a guest.

I was a line medic with the Cav. I shot over 1,000 rolls of film, developed it and put it into books. 27 years later was the first time I looked at them and had the Neg's scanned to DVD's. Before the war I was a lab tec and shot alot of weddings and construction photos.
Now I still take photos but it for the work we do with the desplaced children that we serve in the Baja of Mexico.
The big ? What should I do with all of the photos I have.

I was amazed by all of your beautiful Dancing Pictures. You are my favourite photograper. I wish I can learn from you. I noticed you use Canon, may I know which model do you use & which lens is your favour portrait lens? All help will be appreciated.
Your work amazes me, especially the dancers with your great timing capturing dancers at their best in both available lighting and studio shoots. WOW...I am not too into people shoots but love your work.... Always look forward to your new galleries!
I just viewed two of your many galleries, I am only fairly new to pbase and only just found you, thank god I did! Your work is superb and I am gob smacked (and that is unusual! lol). I look forward to visiting again and again and again and again..........

Fabulous shots! You did a brilliant job in conveying the mood of that era.
Given that I'm born to Vietnamese parents who use to live in the city of Danang during this time (in their teens) I enjoy perusing images like these to feel what it was like back then. From the stories my parents told me, the Americans had a quite a postive impact, mostly cultural/linguistic wise which usurped the French e.g.cars,food,baked beans, clothes.
Anyway,I came here to try to find pictures of my grandfather who was a chief architect/civil engineer in that period.I'm wondering if you might have ever worked with him, and have any personal photos? I don't have many photos of him because they were either lost or destroyed. I'm after a photo of a very very tall and well built Vietnamese man, around 50 or 60 called Phuc Tran or Don Tran/Mr Tran.
He use to have construction projects involving roads, bridges and oil containers or wells of some sort (those round white ones) around DaNang. My grandfather had a friend (Vietnamese) who did projects involving the air tarmac or planes..
There was a time when a prominent American politician or general came to Da Nang to visit and my grandfather gave the politician a tour of a construction site. There was quite a publicity, and my mum said there was a photo of them shaking hands which was published. If you know of any such event or person, please contact me, I will give more specific names/details (after asking my mum).
What's really depressing was when the communist took over they made my grandfather work for them unpaid (he built a university for them), and confiscated the working equipments/apparatus.
I also have family members who were associated with the Americans and held important ranks though I don't think you would have a connection to them.
Moreover, you might not view the American involvement favourably because of the losses, but my parent's believed it would have been good in hindsight if South Vietnam or VN today was merged as an American state like Hawaii or Alaska. This is because under the current communist system,Vietnam is basically a complex vassal of china. The communist faction in power are ultimately submitting to land snatches by its northern neighbour, and the chinese are slowly taking over and attacking VN from the north, middle and south. This information is censored in VN.It's quite dangerous what the Chinese are doing because I can vouch for the fact that Asia is on the brink of another war.
(Please look up Hoang Sa Paracel Islands, or Chinese military occupation of daklak, bauxite mine)
I hope I didn't bore you too much. I sincerely wish you could assist me in finding a photo of this man.
Once again, your images are awesome! It's amazing how you have documented these precious images in time, because Vietnam today is a stark contrast.
Hope things are going well with you. Your galleries are looking great. Just checking back to see your new photos! Been a while since Ive been on PBase! A lot of water over the dam since then! Ive been in the hospital twice. The last time I was backing out of my Van and for some reason my lift went all the way to the ground and I backed out in my wheelchair. Fell about 3ft and my head hit the lift. They airlifted me to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. I had a bad head injury. I was their 4 days. They didnt have to do surgery thank god. Back to your photos! Always enjoy looks at your galleries. They Vietnam gallery is the best. Ive looked through it four are five times and still see something new. Anyway I just stopped by to say hello and look at your new stuff. Ill be back soon. Take Care Richard.
Oh my gosh finally, months back I mentioned a curiosity about what some of your skills could do pertaining just to hands. Perfect ...perfect, perfect, I look forward to seeing your interpretation of captured emotion and drama from the beauty of a posed ...frozen in time........... The Hand....
I see another winning gallery on the horizon!!
:)enjoy ..................

I have just spent the last hour going through your galleries- still catching my breath! truly brilliant and inspiring work Thanks for sharing these...
Hi Richard,
I've read your interview in the last issue of PBase magazine and just finished watching your profile video on Dance Channel TV. I've followed your work for some time and new you had amazing talent, but I just wanted to throw some kudos your way for your community service. In the Dance Channel TV spot were you using the 70-200 f/2.8?
Thanks for sharing the photos of dancers. I have always wanted to shoot dancers (but don't know any and haven't had time to pursue that aspect seriously) and what I was visualizing in my mind is exactly what you have done. Your shots, with the striking poses and superb lighting, achieve my ideal vision, something I rarely manage myself -- there is almost always something I see afterwards that I wish I had done better. Thanks for the inspiration, and thank you again for sharing your work.
Great you are so succesfull and get a lot of credits FINALLY !!
But still you have time to help others ......
That is great and says more about you then is written down in Pbase magazine !! Without your help my first show i did, had not delivered the material i have now !!! Thanks to your help in many mails i had experience (yours, hahah) ,i did not have at all !!
Thank you for being a kind person and sharing your work !!
Richard thank you for honoring me with your many kind words about my work! To have an artist like you take the time to look at my work is a true privilege!

Richard, You have some really wonderful ballet pictures. The show the beauty and grace, and strength of them very well. I was wondering if you have looked into another very beautiful sport, that of rhythmic gymnastics. I do quite a bit of that. Unfortunately controlled lighting is the biggest problem there.
Here are just a few that I have taken recently maybe they will pique your interest in pursuing this unique sport too. www dot rhythmicmom dot com/rpod/

Didn't want to leave the regular comment. Your work deserves more than just a passing glance. Your images are works of art and the people you photograph are works of art themselves. I don't shoot people myself at least not at this point, but your images inspire me to at least think about it. Do you have or have you ever thought about a book with your work? Your dancer images are breathtaking and deserving of the praise of Avodon. Keep the great stuff coming! Let me know if you ever publish a book. I would purchase a copy in a heartbeat!
Your dance photos are fabulous! What camera do you normally use? I may be shooting a performance here in Bangkok, and I'm going to have a better camera than I have now. Any other advice regarding shooting performers in action would be most appreciated.
Thank you very much for taking time to visit my Architecture gallery, and for your kind comments on it! Your work is simply wonderful, and I have really enjoyed it! Ceya
Thanks for taking the time to look at my gallery of Ta Prohm and leaving a comment. You wanted to know where Indiana Jones was? Ta Prohm was the temple used for TOMB RAIDER with Angelina Jolie. BTW, you have some absolutely stunning photos in your galleries, particularly those of dancers.

I've enjoyed browsing through your images frequently, and while the quality of all your work in superb, none is better than the Vietnam images. It was a period that effected our generation world-wide, not just SE Asia and the US. It was, and is, images such as yours, Richard, that keep a human face on that tragedy.

I'm fully touched Richard,. Your work is just spectacular and amazing in each of the details. You're absolutely more then just "photographer". You splendid captures from Vietnam touched me so much, my grandpa gone there. Even that I'm just the beginner with DSLR photography, I truly appreciated that you're here, cause we all have some possibilities to learn how to make and show exposures of images for all over the world - especially on PBase.
Please keep in mind, that I wouldn't say everything what I fell right now after some fist look of you galleries content. I'm pretty sure that I will stopping by your PBase corner more often, when I will just find couple of minutes you've got me here for sure.
I'll be also very very happy if some of my productions would satisfied your purely PROFESSIONAL approach and you can leave me so kind comments there.
Thank you so much Richard that we're "here" together,
Hello Richard !
Thank you for sharing your pictures with us !!!
Even old pictures (Vietnam) or the new Ballet pictures shows you are more then a good photographer and that makes it so special you share them in this way.
You show us how it must be done and we can learn a lot from you....
So please keep uploading,

Hi Richard. You are a truely gifted photographer and I am totally inspired by your work.
Thank you VERY much for stopping by my student's site and leaving comments. It is definately inspiring for them to have an accomplished photographer like you to stop by and take the time to view their work. I sincerely appreciate it.
I am a huge fan and amazed at how well you can control the light in a studio, with the musicians and dancers, and capture so much emotion and energy. The 3rd in the new series of the violinist is truly extraordinary, with the face beyond the focal plane. However I have to disagree with the crowd and say that while the light on the last one is perfect (74476673), the bow angle doesn't work for me. At any rate, your landscapes and nature shots are also phenomenal, and I have learned a lot from your work. Thanks.
You have here an excellent collection of shots. Each gallery has a lot of masterpieces. A pleasure for the eyes!
Thank you very much for your very nice comments in my galleries.

I am still in touch with the House Model who worked with me in the early '70s, She had just completed Ballet School. Therefore your work brings so many memories flooding back to us. Unfortunately I was never able to go back stage to capture those stunning shots that you delight us with.

I really love your pictures and the way you can catch things.
Every time i come back to look at your pictures i see new things and learn each time more an more. I hope i will get some time in 2007 to come back and practice some things i learned from your pictures to put into mine.
Richard, Your galleries are absolutely stunning and, in my opinion, show some of the best work on this site.
Thank you for the kind comment on my "escaping..." image, I consider it a great compliment coming from a photographer of your caliber.
Kind regards,
Irene
Richard, I am so pleased that you like the rendition that I made of one of your beautiful photographs from you Ballet collection.
Your work with the EOS 5D is outstanding; I recently also purchased a similar camera, you certainly inspire me to try some work in low light conditions.
Best wishes.................. Ken

Your dancers share the charm of snowflakes...all so beautiful and
also so different in all of your quite extraordinary presentations.
It is such a gift to the dancers, the photographer and also us viewers of
your exquisite collection/confection of artists.
May 2007 bring pain free feet and batteries that never wear down...all kinds %:)
Very nice job on your galleries. I also work with a ballet company, but as a photographer, I do their web pages. I really like your bird shots which are my photographic interest.
Hi Richard, just wanted to say your photos are nothing short of outstanding! Such incredibly detailed and beautiful work you do! I'm curious, what camera do you use?

Hello Richard,
My husband and I have included you as one of our favorite photographers. We actually made a link to your photo gallery from my technology page http://techpage.joensharo.com/photography.html). You continue to inspire us with your great skill and talent. Keep up the magnificent job! Hope you can visit our photo gallery as well which can be found athttp://www.pbase.com/dickersons.
You've definately made me see the beauty in ballet. Well done, I imagine its a very challenging sort of photography as the timing has to be spot on (Not like the fungi shots I take on a tripod lol). Keep it up.

Hi Richard. Thanks for visiting and commenting. I got the Erector set for Christmas when I was about 8 years old, but I have a strong feeling my mom had a lot to do with it. She had more fun with it than I did! She assembled the merry-go-round and ferris wheel. Me? I kept putting together simple nothings. BTW "Illuminational Sequestering" was a very good choice. :)
Astounding works throughout all your galleries, Richard.
This is photography on a different level, unique, artistic, the works of a true pro!
Looking forward to your future works.
Thanks for visiting my NYC Marathon gallery. I appreciate the comments. Started with your Scenics and have now been admiring all your other galleries as well. Beautiful work. I'm looking forward to more.
Richard: Howdy to you! I have been updating my Galleries with different everything, rotating, titles, etc. and adding new photos. Still can't figure out the underscore I Get with typing in Gallery names. Any advice is appreciated. Bill
Congratulations!
I love your work.
Using a selection of your great collection I have created a composition called "bailarinas/ballerinas". You'll see in Google video. I hope you enjoy.

Hi Richard,
Fist I would like to say you're photos are wonderful. I am part of a graphics design forum called Avatars-n-Siggies. I was wondering if perhaps you would be willing to allow us to use your art. We are very artist friendly, we only use art work only with permission and would put your copyright on everything we create using your art. As a guest it will not allow me to post the link to our fourm but if you e-mail me I can give you the web address and even examples of what we would do with your work if you so wish.
Richard, this is what I mean about a photographer shortchanging them self by not taking a full shot.
Do you see the advantage?
More WhitneySue for your buck.
:)
Your photography is absolutely outstanding! I found you at Innographx. Thank you so much for allowing us to paint some of your outstanding ballet photos! Thank you also for visiting my site and leaving a comment. I will return often.
Ooooh Richard, I could cry with joy, i'm serious.
Excellent shots!
I saw your work and said to myself "OH MY GOD!!OH MY GOD!!!
Makes you wonder how anything can get more beautiful then the dancing itself but a ballet dancer frozen in time during an exquisite pose, it's priceless!!(it's forever)
Congratulations, you've outdone yourself!!

Richard, I am at a loss for words... Your work is absolutly remarkable! Thank you for your kind words on our site- to hear them from someone as incredible a photographer as yourself is very encouraging. My dad always told me that there are two types of people in life that you listen to: Those who are more successfull than you and those who have experienced it! Thank you again- I certainly look forward to more of your work! Stephanie Owens (pbase.com/aop777)

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your comments, I love your new gallery for the dancers. They just keep getting better and better. Amazing work. Where did you get that beautiful backdrop from? I am using smaller ones but I love the texture on yours.

Sepia?
I'm a sepia freak Richard.
I feel it adds depth to certain pictures.
Some even look a bit more classier.
It's like getting more for your money....
The same picture and all the glory that goes with it but something deeper.
It's really odd, I've changed some pictures to sepia and have gotten a different form of respect and admiration. (I mean the picture not me)
Richie, did you know that I (Lito)have a lot of comments on Rod ostoski-space shuttle sts1 but it was deleted from yesterday July 11, 2006. I believe he couldn't take the critique I layed out for him so he deleted my comments.
Hi Richad,
Thank you so much your very kind comment. I enjoyed your gallery. These are absolutely awesome art!! Keep them coming your excellent works! I'll chek back later.

Your Ballet collection is probably the best I've ever seen. You should have a book produced as the small photos don't represent the outstanding quality the original must have.
You are an inspiration to all photographers young and old.
Thanks for your comment Richard. I've seen some of your galleries, excellent quality work. Keep on shooting!

Thank you for your comments.
I recieved my Maxxum 7D, last Wednesday, the night befor my daughters performance of Music Man Jr. Shot every thing between 400 and 1600 ISO. I did have the advantage of using a tripod, but had to set-up in the seating area, so I also have a couple of audience head shots in the pictures as well.
You are such an excellent photographer. Your works a really outstanding. I am so happy for your commenets. This is a great day for me. Thank you very much.
Hello Richard, thanks for your comment on my Anzac photo. I really appreciate your words because I know just how good a photographer you are. It's very encouraging for someone like me who is really just starting out.
Thanks again

Truly appreciate your kind comment on my humble gallery. It's been a great discovery and learning experience for me after going through your works. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks for your lovely comments, their really appreciated especially from some with such vision and talent. I'll be visiting your galleries regualrly and I'll probably have the odd question as well. David
I was very pleasantly surprised to find a parcel from the US on my doorstep today. After having opened it and browsed through the program notes, I played the DVD and it is amazing! The story brought back great and very vivid memories and that is not even referring to the very professional performances of The Gwinnett Ballet Theatre.
I was already impressed by your still shots of Jody and David Blumenfeld but after seeing the performance, my ratings of them has sky-rocketed. I must admit that initially I was mesmerized by the story and the magnificent performance but the second time (Yes, it is 21:00 now and we have already watched it twice since we got home just before 18:00 tonight as we had friends over who wanted to see the performance as well and they just arrived before the Finale (I wonder how close you came to strangling that spectator in the middle of the frame ).
The second time I really noticed the difficulty in getting a good photograph with this light and quick action which has raised my admiration for your work even more. Holley may be the Marketing Director but you are probably the best ambassador for the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre that anyone could possibly wish for. I love the heart-warming tribute to the legendary and inspirational Whitney Sue.
I was also delighted to recognize Garet, Jodi and Sara from the work that you have submitted here but that does not mean that the other dancers are not equally magnificent.
Love can transpose to form and dignity.
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.
Nor hath love's mind of any judgment taste,
Wings and no eyes figure unheeded haste,
And therefore is love said to be a child,
Because in choice he is so often beguiled
Love may not look with the eyes, but with the mind, but if you would not have taken the time and devotion to capture the story so beautifully, the love would not necessarily have reached the Jersey shores.
With great respect and the deepest gratitude, I remain sincerely yours!
You are a fabulous photographer and I would like to thank you very much for the comment you left on my gallery dedicated to Gothic masterpieces from France. ERic

Richard, thanks for posting your Viet Nam historical photos -- not many of us were able to take pictures there or saved them. I found my color slides a while back and am putting them together in various stories on my blog. I was an architect in the Navy with many construction sites up and down Viet Nam in 1972. It is great to see you doing good service to others through your skills and experience.

Hi Richard: You were so very kind to drop a brief favorable note on my sunset picture, which I appreciate very much. Your own very extensive photography on a wide variety of subjects is itself very impressive. I particularly liked the Ballet, mountain scenery and the sunsets, especially the ones where the sun is close to or touching the horizon. Best wishes. JARIS
